How to Mine Electroneum With a Mobile Phone

Last updated on October 2, 2019 308 Comments

Electroneum is the first cryptocurrency that allows users to mine coins with a mobile phone. This new feature will allow millions of smartphone users around the world to get started with cryptocurrency mining, an industry previously reserved for computer geeks and nerds (read more about the project here). The mobile miner launched on 5 March 2018.

How to Mine Electroneum

Mining Electroneum on a smartphone is fairly straightforward:
  1. Download the app to your device and create an account on the Electroneum website (here’s a helpful guide).
  2. Log into the app using your credentials.
  3. Go to the Miner tab at the bottom and click the Start Mining button.
That’s it! Your phone will now start mining. It will show your hash rate (the speed at which your device is mining) as well as the pending balance (how many coins have been mined) on the screen. Trading uses different strategies. The trending one is automated trading. Have a look at this Crypto superstar erfahrungen to learn more about automated trading. So let’s discuss how this all works…

What is Mobile Mining or Cloud Mining?

The process that we currently call Mobile Mining (soon to be known as and replaced by Cloud Mining) is the activity of rewarding users with free ETN every month. Users are able to mine up to $3 USD worth of ETN each and every month, which can be stored or spent with any retailer that accepts ETN. If you haven’t already opted into Cloud Mining, you should update to the latest version of the Electroneum App and activate the cloud mining process. In the near future this will be the only route by which you will be able to continue In-App Mining. For many in the developing world, where monthly income is often less than $50 per month, an additional $3 per month can make a significant difference to their daily lives, allowing them to have a little more each day. Cryptocurrencies reward “miners” for running the blockchain. Rather than the ETN all being earned by a handful of users with warehouses of powerful computers, we distribute an ETN reward to users of our free app. By giving users an ongoing reward, we have achieved the fastest viral growth of any cryptocurrency. As our ecosystem expands globally, we aim to be the largest cryptocurrency by user number in the world.

Conclusion

The mobile miner is a giant leap forward in the cryptocurrency industry and will enable millions of users to get their hands on cryptocurrency with relative ease. In addition to mining Electroneum with your smartphone, you can also:

Try to clear the cache in your app, log out and log back in, or reinstall. That might do the trick to fix it. Also if you have Android v8+, there is an operating system setting the kills data to applications that run in the background.

Hi, the Electroneum terms of service allow only one Electroneum account mining per device, and they will allow up to 5 devices per IP before getting suspicious.

Yes this is a problem for many people, especially those who run Android Oreo. There are settings in the Apps Manager and Battery Settings that allows the app to keep running in the background, but these are not foolproof and don’t work on all devices. Electroneum will be launching cloud mining in the future, if it turns out to be successful on iOS. In this way it won’t need to have the app running in the background.

Welcome to Electroneum! The mobile miner mines around 10 ETN (sometimes going up to 11 or 12) before paying it out to your app wallet. If it’s still not paying out at about 15-18 ETN, the best way would be to contact support.

Could be next month, could be 10 years, could be never. No one knows, and there is no way of determining this. The price is simply a reflection of supply and demand. When the number of people who want to buy ETN outnumbers those who want to sell, the price will rise.

Hello, is there still some systems delay in crediting the ETN you’ve mined? It took me 2 months to credit the 10.29 ETN, then I mined 30.35 ETN before it was deducted in my pending balance, this is yet to be credited. After a one month break in mining, I’ve mined 14.26 ETN. My last transaction was credited in my balance immediately. Will I still have my 30.35ETN?

If anyone’s going to create it, it will need to be the official Electroneum team. They control the servers that release the mobile mined coins, so other developers won’t be able to get access.

The blockchain was forked on 30 May, and afterwards there were some problems with very slow transaction processing. The team had therefore temporarily paused mobile miner payouts to prevent the loss of anyone’s transactions. Right now things are nearly back to normal. Mobile miner payouts have been resumed again. I’ve received mine a few hours ago. So please have patience and hang in there. Your coins will come.

Hi Benjamin, I have a question. Like one month ago there was probably too much pressure on the blockchain and I mined around 130 ETN before they were sent to be processed. Unfortunately, I still don’t have them in my wallet (after that every 10 or so ETN was processed without problems). Do you think it’s normal because it was so many coins at once, and they are being still processed? Thank you for your answer!

Electroneum is definitely not a scam. I’ve just receive a mobile miner payment from them a few hours ago. The ETN blockchain was forked on 30 May, and following that there were some problems with high difficulty that took a few days to be sorted out. Right now things and nearly back to normal and transactions are being processed again. You should receive your ETN soon.

I’m trying something new for me. The Android phone is connected to Wi-Fi and the mining app is running. Then I hit the side button and the screen goes dark. The battery goes down 10% in 4 1/2 hours. When I left the screen on it would be dead in 4 1/2 hours. Older phone battery . What I’m finding when I start the screen back up, the app appears to update the ETN right then. So much for every hour that the screen has been dark. So the app runs but does not update the ETN until the screen shows. So my question is, will the ETN ever go to my wallet when the screen is dark?

    • Benjamin says

      June 6, 2018 at 7:28 am

Don’t worry, your app is mining perfectly in the background. There’s just no reason for it to update the pending balance while the screen is dark because no one is seeing it. So, therefore, it updates only the moment when the screen comes back on again. But mining is continuing in the background despite the screen being off, and you will receive all the ETN for those “screen-off” hours.

As far as I know, there is also no way to remove a phone number. Requiring a mobile number confirmation is an anti-spam technique, and the ability to remove a phone number would, therefore, render the whole process useless. You will need to create a new account with a new email address and a new phone number. The phone number is only a one-time verification, so you’ll be able to log into the new account on your original phone. Then you should be able to scan your girlfriend’s referral code.

As I understand there are 7 billion ETN for mobile mining and the same amount for computer mining. Do you have any knowledge as to how many have been mined in each category so far?
Would you possibly have any knowledge about how long a period of time they want the mobile mining ETN to last before the 7 billion are all mined? 5 years 10 years?
    Reply
    • Benjamin says

      May 19, 2018 at 4:36 pm

The total computer-mined ETN can be determined by adding up all the block rewards from all of the nearly 300k blocks mined so far (I’m busy setting up a statistic that will track this over on the statistics section of the blog). You can find this information on the block explorer. But at the moment, I’m not exactly sure. I guess it’s somewhere around 2 billion ETN. As for the mobile miner, I don’t think there’s really a way of knowing this number. The mobile ETN are in wallets under the team’s management. And due to the privacy features of ETN, we would not be able to see the balance of those wallets unless we had their public wallet addresses and private view keys. I know they’ve pre-mined around 12.6 billion coins in the first block (as you can see here) of which around 5 billion went to ICO purchases and referral earnings, some amount went to the bounty program and the team’s compensation, and about 7 billion is reserved for mobile mining. I know CoinMarketCap has a counter of the number of coins in circulation, but I’m not sure if this includes the mobile mined coins or not, since they also won’t have any way of knowing that amount unless being granted access by the Electroneum team.
    • Benjamin says

      May 19, 2018 at 4:39 pm

I know the team mentioned that their most optimistic scenario planning assured them that they will have enough ETN to let mobile miners mine for 10 years or more. But this value is highly dependant on various factors, like the number of mobile miners coming on board and the price of ETN. The computer-mined side will still carry on for quite a long time. The block reward for each block reduces slowly over time, so it will also take years to mine.

Is there any specific mobile requirement, like Android version, RAM, processor? If not, then I still have a slightly similar question: Do these parameters make any difference apart from hash rate? Because I am using 3 mobiles, unique mobile numbers & emails:
    1- Android 6.0, 4 GB, running on a stand-alone 4G network
    2- Android 4.2.2, 1 GB running on a stand-alone 3G network
3- Android 4.2.2, 1 GB running on a stand-alone 3G network Facing issues with phones 2 and 3, since after 1-2 hours the ETN miner gets disconnected while the internet is working fine. Then I try to re-log into, but never make it. Any input?

    • Benjamin says

      May 8, 2018 at 11:26 am

These requirements have a slight effect on the hash rate, but not on anything else. A faster processor will get you a faster hash rate. I think the reason that your two smaller phones get disconnected is due to the Android system closing the app to make way for apps in the foreground. It will keep apps running in the background until the memory gets too full to support all the running apps, and then it will start closing apps that have not been used in a while. You can try to stop this by finding the specific settings in your battery settings that forces the app to stay open and not be closed to save battery power. Also, make sure that background mobile data is enabled on all our phones to allow Electroneum to communicate with the server even while running in the background.

    A few questions:
    1. With the latest Android update to Oreo lots of people have experienced a 50% drop in their H/s. Mine went from 50H/s to 30H/s. Do we have a resolution for this?
    2. I now have 250+ ETN sat on my phone waiting to be transferred. Is their an issue we should be aware of?
    3. When I go through my transaction history, there is a 510 ETN difference between what has been received into my account and what has been sent to my paper wallet. I noticed quite a few issues “no response from blockchain”. Again, is there an issue we should be aware of?

      1. Yeah, lots of people have been getting this issue. Not sure why this is or where it is coming from, but I’m sure the team is working on resolving it.
      2. Coins in your pending balance will show up eventually. The team has made a post on Facebook stating that users are being paid in batches, and after you receive your initial payment you’ll get paid every 10 ETN. So please be patient, it will come.
      3. It the transactions show “no response from blockchain” they have most likely failed and can be attempted again. There were lots of errors like a while back when the blockchain was flooded with thousands of transactions, which were eventually dropped and not processed. This problem will be solved with the hard fork coming on 30 May.

The hash rate is basically dependent on the amount of available processing power of your phone. 30 H/s is the minimum hash rate, and faster phones get up to 50 H/s, which is the maximum. You could try to optimize your phone’s processing power somewhat by following these tips.

Not sure how this will play out. The Electroneum system is still learning from data points. I’ve seen that, once multiple devices mine on one wifi address, they block some of the devices, and you need to fill in a questionnaire to tell them about your situation. Once you’ve done that, you will be allowed to mine again. They are using this data to determine if some person is trying to game the system with hundreds of devices, or if it just a place (like at a workplace) where multiple people connect to the same wifi address. So I’m not exactly sure how they will treat you.

Mobile miner payments were halted due to high blockchain traffic but were subsequently resumed. PC miners, however, work on a different system. You should check with your pool to see how many coins you have mined, and what their payment threshold is.

Most slower phones are now boosted to a minimum of 30 H/s, while smarter phones can range up to 50 H/s. Before the change, I calculated an average of about 0.02 ETN per day for every 1 H/s. After the change, I’ve observed that you can mine about 0.3 ETN per day for every 1 H/s. So to find a benchmark for what you can mine per day, multiply your hash rate by 0.3 ETN.

That’s strange. It should pay out once reaching 10 ETN. I do know that they’ve recently upgraded the app, so there might be some change that is preventing it from paying out. Although, mine is paying out fine even after the update. It would be a good idea to write a message to Electroneum’s support and state your problem. The app is a mining simulation in the sense that it does not perform calculations and store transactions like a real mining node (like your computer would do). But it behaves and acts like a real miner, without draining your phone’s battery power. However, the Electroneum team rewards you with REAL Electroneum for being part of the mobile miner. The Electroneum you get is REAL and can be exchanged for other cryptocurrencies on any exchange that supports Electroneum. You can also exchange it for fiat at exchanges that support this, such as CoinSpot.

The ETN paid out by the mobile miner have been premined by the team in the first block. They are now handing out those coins to everybody running the mobile miner, according to the hash rate of your phone. The mobile miner is simulated in that it does not perform actual calculations and submit transactions to the blockchain, but the coins being paid out by the team are real coins – you can move them anywhere after they’re paid out to your wallet. The mobile miner looks, performs, and pays out like a real miner, though, since the end game is to teach the public about mining and helping them get their hands on a few coins.

The team is still learning how to allow single phones to mine while blocking people that set up hundreds of phones and try to game the system. This is no easy task, so the algorithm keeps learning and evolving over time. So just be patient with this for a while. When you see the message, just complete the questions and submit. Happened to me as well. I think the coins have been deducted and are in a queue to be paid out to your wallet. Remember the team has to pay more than 50,000 miners, and all of those transactions need to be processed by the blockchain. Your transaction is either in a queue, or the team is waiting for times when the blockchain is quieter in order to have lower fees. Let me know if this problem persists.

Hi, Please advice. I am confused. What do I pay to earn my coins? And if you give me coins for free, and the mining starts to build up, and it gets put into my wallet, will I be able to use this as cash in my pocket? Will I be able to take $1000 and buy coins and get cash back as my mining grows? And will I get more out if I put more in?

You don’t need to pay anything to earn ETN. The whole point is to give everyone a small amount of ETN to own, and hopefully make crypto more mainstream. You’ll be able to use the coins you mine as a medium of exchange. You could use it to buy things from your friends, and hopefully from vendors if they start accepting it. You’ll also be able to buy airtime with it on some carriers (see Electroneum’s partnerships). Else, you’ll be able to sell your ETN at an exchange for some other cryptocurrency or for fiat. You can buy more ETN at any time at a cryptocurrency exchange. Currently, Cryptopia and Qryptos list ETN. If the coin appreciates in value from the time you bought it to the time you sell, you’ll get more out than you put in. PS. Dis lekker om ‘n mede Suid Afrikaner hier te sien!!

Hello, I’m using a Note 8 to “mine” (or maybe “market” could be a better word for it) and only getting 21 h/s. Only 0.06 ETN for 5 hours mining (info for all of you thinking about getting rich on mobile mining ). I’m wondering if it’s possible to set multiple mobiles (up to 5 devices) to the same paper wallet address, and how it works if someone tried already? Also, you guys were talking about mining games? Where can I find those? Thanks in advance for your answers!

21 H/s seems a tad slow for the Note 8. Perhaps your phone has too many apps running in the background. Read this article for tips on how to optimize your phone for maximum mining. You’ll be able to mine with up to 5 devices per IP address, although each of them will require a brand new account with a unique email address. The team has indicated that they will block IP addresses that try to connect more than 5 devices. This is to keep out whales that try to take advantage of the system by mining with hundreds of phones or by creating virtual Android devices on a computer. I’m not sure where the game went. The team said that they’ll release the game with the miner, and they’ve even posted a video with several screenshots of the game. Perhaps it’s still in the works. I’ll write an article about it once it becomes available.

Why does the mobile miner keeps shutting down? The app runs for about half an hour or less and then it shuts down. When I check my phone, the app is on the insert PIN screen and I have to start the miner again and again. Why doesn’t it stay on as long as I let it? It should only stop when I decide to press the “stop mining” button.

Agreed. Check if your phone’s background data is enabled (or at least enabled for the Electroneum app). I’m thinking that the app stops mining if it can’t communicate with the Electroneum servers in the background. Also, make sure you don’t accidentally close the app by pressing the “Close all” button in the app tray.

You don’t need any ETN on your device. Just start mining and let it run. It should pay out to your online wallet when the balance reaches somewhere around 5 – 10 ETN. The Electroneum team has set the payout threshold at 50,000 ETN just for the launch of the miner so that they’ll be able to catch out-of-control mining bugs in the beginning. This threshold will be reduced to 5 or 10 ETN later on.

Not sure what the exact date will be. We’ll need to wait on the team for that. KuCoin should also go live this week, according to the team’s Facebook account. That’s what I’m counting one. I recently upgraded to an S8 myself, and with the beta mining, I’ve seen hash rates of 42 H/s (the highest I’ve seen so far on any phone is 47 H/s). It will be a close call between the S8 and the Note 8 (with its various variations). Richard Ells eluded in a blog post that a high-end smartphone “such as the S8” should be able to mine the most coins. So let’s hope his predictions were accurate. Only time will tell which phone will be the fastest miner.

This website is a private endeavor not affiliated with the Electroneum team. The mobile mining app brings a different utility to the blockchain than real miners – a utility of marketing. It’s built from the ground up with mass adoption in mind. Users get rewarded for running the miner on their mobile phones, playing the educational mining game, or referring others. As long as users are mining, they’ll constantly be checking their balance and showing it to others, and this is the whole idea behind the mobile miner and why users get compensated – to have them experience it and show it to more and more people.

Sounds like you’re running the full miner. I would rather suggest you use the pool miner, which combines your efforts with thousands of other miners, who all share in each other’s rewards. This will allow you to slowly accumulate ETN over time. Running a solo miner will take you years with an i3 processor to see any coins. That being said, your i3 laptop might struggle to compete with other high-end processors and GPU units out there. What is your current hash rate?

Does the computer miner also only simulate mining and not really use any CPU power? Since my CPU is 100% ? Also, I have an i5 3.2Ghz CPU and it only outputs 50-100 H/s which won’t ever cover my electricity costs. Calculators show me it’s like $12 a month. What could a mobile phone do then? Earn $1 a month? I’m being serious here, trying to understand how the things are. So I’d appreciate if you answered ? All the best,

Very valid question. Computers do real mining and use real processing power. You’re right in saying that 50-100 H/s won’t bring you anywhere. ETN might still increase in price which will then cover your costs, but that’s not a given. You will be better off getting a GPU running. Mobile phones, on the other hand, will not perform real mining, but rather a simulation of mining. You will be assigned a hash rate based on the “available” CPU power on your mobile. So a faster phone will earn more ETN, and if you play a CPU intensive game, your hash rate will drop temporarily. But the mobile miners is not at all affected by the difficulty on computer miners. There are two different pools, each with about 7 billion coins, from which these two sections get their coins. One does not affect the other. Your mobile mining hash rate will also be affected by the number of active mobile miners and the current price of the ETN coin.

Since the mining is simulated, where do the coins come from? They can’t all come from Electroneum’s reserves, as those are finite. Or is Electroneum simply hoping that as the ETN payout for mobile mining decreases significantly that those same people will migrate over to Computer Mining, meaning, the reserves won’t actually run out? Also, there is only simple mining software for Windows. Mac and Linux have to use the complicated command prompts. For now I’ve opted to go with Sumo Miner and have joined a pool.

Electroneum has premined about 7 billion coins in the first block, dedicated to the mobile mining pool. They will emit these coins according to an algorithm to mobile miners. Another 7 billion is allocated for computer mining whole the remaining 7 billion has been premined for ICO coins, bounty, and the team’s coins.

It’s hard to tell how many coins you’ll be able to main since it also depends on other software running on your computer, your Internet connection speed, and other things. The best is to start the process, see how many hashes you get, and then use this mining calculator to determine how many coins you’ll be able to mine per day. Although, I think a 2.6 GHz processor won’t bring you many coins. If you want to get any real returns you should look into GPU mining (if you have a graphics card).

You can’t mine to an exchange. Try using a paper wallet instead.

It’s too early to say. But I’m sure with the large user base Electroneum has already, it’s only a matter of time until it becomes available.

It’s very difficult to predict that. The value of ETN fluctuates with the supply and demand for it in the market. If more people want to buy ETN, the price will rise. If more people want to sell ETN, the price will drop. But I’m a firm believer in this coin’s ability to achieve viral growth. So I definitely see it rising over the long term, though not sure by how much.

The cellphone miner is not yet active. It should become active sometime in the new year. I’ll update this guide to show the steps at that time. For now, you can install the app on your phone and create an account. This guide will show you how.

The mobile miner is not available yet and won’t be until sometime in the new year. The reason is that Electroneum is busy beta testing the mining systems to make sure they all function properly. This is a requirement of some of the partnerships they are getting into. The iOS app is also not available yet but should be launched sometime next year.

I’ve been using your mining pool and I use my public wallet address to mine ETN on my PC and iPhone. It seems to be that the iPhone is accepting the same address to mine ETN. It sometimes declines. I refresh my webpage and try again, and it starts to mine. Hopefully it is working or it would not start to mining. I will give it a few days and will try with a laptop as well.

Try searching for the vault or quarantine region on your antivirus, and restore the file “electroneumd” to remove it from quarantine.

Same happening with me. Been mining about 15 hours with no results. There are so many people mining that the odds of your pool solving a block is becoming less and less. The good mining opportunities were at the beginning. Within an hour after launch I could mine 500 coins in 10 minutes. But now there’s nothing happening. The guys with the sophisticated mining rigs are taking over.

No, shares are only an indication of your contribution to the pool, based on your processing power. The total ETN mined by the pool is divided by the total shares contributed to the pool.

The coins in the app wallets are kept locked until security issues can be bypassed. This is for the safety of investors, to ensure only the rightful investors have access to their coins. Should be opened up soon – perhaps within days. Once coins are available, you can transfer to an exchange and sell for a profit. I advise you hold for a longer time, though.

    Hello,
When I mine with computer CPU what to select for mining port? It says port 3333 for low end CPU.
What is low end CPU? I have 5 computers. Got one i3-6100, one Celeron n3050, and three AMD Sempron 140.
And what to select on #threads? I need to check how many threads does my CPU have then set that number or what?

    • Benjamin says

      November 2, 2017 at 8:05 am

The port refers to your computer speed. Typically, I would recommend 3333 for i3 processors, 5555 for i5, and 7777 for i7. Easy to remember. The threads refer to the number of parallel processes running at the same time on your computer. I recommend starting with 4. Then check how much of your CPU is being used up by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, selecting Task Manager, and then going to the Performance tab. If less than 100% of your processor is used, increase the number of threads and start again. Play around with the variables to find an optimum.

    Hello sir,
What else should be done after entering all the details in the mining software. How do I get to check whether the coins have been sent to the paper wallet? When I sign off the internet and return later and launch the mining software, the previous number of shares is no longer there and it starts afresh. Is there something to worry about? Thanks in advance.

You can go to uspool.electroneum.com, eupool.electroneum.com, or asiapool.electroneum.com to check your balance, although all 3 of them have high amounts of traffic right now. However, do not worry if you don’t see a balance, as long as your miner is recording shares, it will be credited to your wallet. It’s not a problem if the share count resets. The share count is just counted from the last time you pressed “Start” and it is an indication of your current contribution to the pool (used to calculate your share of the mined ETN).

Thanks for the post. I am happy that there is someone to breakdown the complex world of cryptocurrencies to newbies. I have always heard of mining but never really paid close attention because in my mind it entails some technical and computational knowledge.
Reading from your write-up, I have this understanding that mining ETN will have to do more with the phone or device than the miner himself. The miner has got little to do in the process. Am I right? If no, correct me.
    Thanks.
